Highlights:
All I'm waiting on is the ability to take and print pictures and Goal 15 will be done.
With another two huge bags of clothes off to Good Will, Goal 42 is complete!
Another bit of progress on Goal 43, and again to my mother's benefit since she's about the size now that I left behind a few pounds ago.
Goal 90 is also (tentatively) complete! Hopefully the paint in the garage won't have to be replaced and, if it doesn't, I only need to buy one can and that shouldn't be a big budget strain so my room will be awesome and this will be done!
My usual rate of progress (above required progress, albeit) has slowed a bit on Goals 92, 93 and 94, but I'm still doing what's necessary so this is good, too.
I tried authentic Mexican food and LOVED it! Next week or so, I may even be trying sushi (Big maybe. I hate fish.), but either way - excitement! (Goal 96)
Questions:
The whole reason for Goal 33 (wear a skirt/dress in public 3x) is that I never, and I mean never, wear anything but jeans in public. I never, ever thought I'd be brave enough for shorts, but recently I've bought two pairs and I like them. Since shorts are an even bigger challenge, should they count or no?
So, I'm a total homebody and extremely shy. This makes Goal 20 (make a new friend) all the more challenging for me and, in my opinion, all the more necessary. Any suggestions on good people-meeting places that don't require a very out-going personality?
Start date: January 13, 2008
( In Progress )
( Complete )
( Details! )
End date: October 10, 2010
P.S. I forgot to crosspost here last week since there was really nothing to update. If, by chance, you're curious, though, here's Week 17.

No, it's not a new Saturday Morning Cartoon/Comic Book/Line of Action Figures... it's this week's SECRET INGREDIENT!!!

CHICKEN!!! The grandest of trashy animals, second only to The Pig! When you can afford more than Top Ramen & Ground Turkey but can't quite justify the expense of Beef, Pork, Lamb or Fish... then CHICKEN will always be there for you! Depending on which part of the little beastie you want to eat, you'll be paying anywhere from 39-cents to $3 per pound for our clucky little friend! And best of all, our Vegetarian members will be able to participate with any one of about a GAZILLION different trashy animal-friendly Chicken Substitutes!
This is going to be another two-week battle, deadline for submissions will probably be Friday, May 30th with the winner being announced some time before the end of that weekend. Sound good? GREAT! And remember; IF IT'S SUBMITTED FOR JUDGING, YOU MUST ASSUME THAT THE PERSON WHO ENTERED IT WAS WILLING TO EAT THE WHOLE THING!

There was a bit of a controversy in this last battle over a certain cake that had a certain crispy-delicious pork product in it. Although the general consensus of the voting was that it sounded delicious, there were two or three judges who thought it was an inedible mockery. They felt it was a waste of perfectly good food. They voted with EXTREMELY LOW SCORES IN ALL CATEGORIES to show their displeasure.
The great thing about judging in this community is that it's open to everybody's personal values. The old saying goes that "One man's trash is another man's treasure", but you've also got to remember that one man's trash may also be another man's absolute GARBAGE. No one will ever be censored or edited in this community as long as it all remains civil. i admire the judges who voted extremely low for voting the way THEY felt, and not the way that Public Opinion would have them swayed.
HOWEVER...
Any and all entries MUST BE EDIBLE. I thought that this was pretty straight-forward here! We're all about trashy EATS, not trashy THROW-AWAYS! I can honestly say that there hasn't been a single entry in this community that I would not try. If you make it and you try it and then you toss it because it tastes terrible, DON'T SUBMIT IT. Delete your pictures and start from scratch, or keep adding ingredients till it IS edible. This should clear up any arguments over the whole "That was a waste of food no one would ever eat that that's disgusting" issue. IF IT IS ENTERED IN THE BATTLE, IT MEANS THAT IT IS EDIBLE.

So, out here, this is called a spodie. It's called other things in other parts of the country/world, but in the circles I've run with out here in Washington state, we call it a spodie.

The line-up. That's a bucket, orange juice concentrate, Hawaiian Punch, generic Sprite, Ruby Red Squirt, watermelon, strawberries, pineapple, Razmatazz, Boone's Strawberry Hill, watermelon Puckerz, Malibu rum, vodka.
A note: This is not an exact recipe for spodie. Anything can comprise a spodie. It's totally up to the creator and the resources available.

Somewhat related to the above: I was thinking about what role I'd be best equipped for if life was like a D&D game. I'm a support player. I'm a friggin' cleric or white mage, waaaaaay back there in the back row. If you're standing on the front line and ask me for my opinion and/or help, I'm there for you. If you tell me to lead the excursion then, man, we're so fucked it isn't even funny. Let me throw my Cure +2 to y'all and let's call it a day, eh?

This rambling post brought to you by a rough night's work, menstrual cramps, possible temporary iron deficiency, two hours restless sleep, and the number Ni.

As further evidence that I am a saving fool, I just unearthed two little plastic swords that I believe are souvenirs of a night out with
nonethewiser and
ladykutenay and our associated husbands nearly two years ago.
So
journalismgirl was in town last week, and we kind of wandered around doing errands and having lunch in Owego. (Owego is one of those towns that's what towns are supposed to be like -- lots of locally owned shops and restos and gorgeous Victorians.) And one of the places we stopped was Jo-Ann Fabrics, because I needed some hooks to fix the ones that broke on my bathing suit tops last year. (Stupid plastic.) So I got metal to replace them. And we wandered around looking at the fabrics. The thing about Jo-Anns is that compared with when I'd go in with my mom as a kid, and even compared with five years ago, they've really gone downhill in their selection of fabrics. I mean, a lot of quilting cottons, and a reasonable selection for home decor, but garment fabric is kind of pathetic. You go through and for the most part it's polyester, polyester, polyester, polyester. A smattering of cotton and linen and rayon, and a small shelf of dupponi silk, but mostly poly poly poly. The depressing part is that that's everything that they sell as "special occasion" fabrics. I mean, they can "special order" it for you, but what's the fun in that? If I'm going to wait for stuff, I might as well buy it online where it's cheaper.
But the two of us went through the garment fabric racks, me going "poly, poly, poly", and both of us discussing how much better it used to be... "poly, poly, poly". Silkies -- all poly. Linen and linen-look: not much linen there. A lot of poly. And then the part that saddens me -- bridal fabrics. Poly poly poly. Who wants to be a polyester bride?
But really. What's with the near-total avoidance of natural fibers? I know that I should be saying this there and not here. But I'm here and not there and it's $4 in gas to get there.

I finally decided to put the stuff I'd been hoarding from the Hippy Camp (Bombed Back to the Stone Age) in my display case, and I'm in the top 10 in four out of the five items (Handful of Pine Needles, Handful of Nuts and Berries, Dreadlock Whips, and Stone Frisbees), with a top twenty in the fifth (Sabre Teeth). Woohoo!
Recipe for insomnia
------------
Take a handful of any of the following irritations, and stir (and toss, and turn).
- My arm is squished if I lie like this.
- My hip hurts if I lie like that.
- The pillow is blocking my nostril.
- My shoulder is too cold.
- My feet are too hot.
- I should get up and go to the bathroom. No I shouldn't. Yes I should. No I shouldn't.
- The inside of my nose itches.
- I'm so hungry my stomach is eating itself.
- My mouth is dry. My teeth are sticking to my lips. I should get a drink of water. No I shouldn't. Yes I should. No I shouldn't.
- My hair is poking me in the neck.
- My ear is bent funny against the pillow.
- My nightshirt is twisted around me too tight.
- I'm preoccupied by those emails I need to answer.
- I'm preoccupied by thinking about illness, injury, and death.
- I'm preoccupied by story ideas I don't spend enough time working on.
- I'm preoccupied by the insulting things people said to me five, ten, or fifteen years ago.
- I'm furious because I'm going to be too tired tomorrow to get anything done.
- Furious. Argh.
- A bird is singing outside. It's only 4:00 a.m. Argh. Hate the bird.
...And this says nothing about sleep disruptions caused by others, such as toddlers. Then, at least, there's a reason I'm awake. But there is nothing more agonizingly frustrating than lying awake for no good reason while the clock ticks away the minutes and hours. 12:48...1:15...2:09...3:34...4:02...and you bargain for less and less time. I'll be all right if I can just get six hours of sleep...or five...or three and a half...or two...
I've been this way off and on for most of my life. The worst spell was in college, when, for no apparent reason, I didn't sleep at all for about a week. These days I usually do get at least a few hours even on the worst nights, and the worst nights are no more than a few times a month. But I'd rather get seven or eight hours every night, thanks.
I don't want meds. At least, not really, not regularly, not so I rely upon them. Does anyone have other sleep-inducing tricks? Acupressure points? Breathing techniques? Melville novels?
All other insomniacs out there, come here. Group hug. I'm sorry I didn't come out earlier. It's nothing to be ashamed of, except maybe once in a while when we turn into total crazy people and beat our heads against the pillow, or kick the mattress repeatedly with our heels, or throw ourselves upon the floor in a frustrated heap. But sleep deprivation is a form of torture, you know.

Last night, an amazing thing happened. The girls went to bed at 6:30 as usual and did not wake up to eat until 2:30! That is 8 hours!! We fed them, they went right back to sleep, and we all went back to bed until Alice started fussing around 5'ish. We tried to feed them at 5:30 but Charlotte wouldn't eat at all and Alice only took an ounce, so we put them back in bed. Alice wanted to come to bed with us, so we brought them in our bed, and we all slept until 7!
I think that if we would have just brought them to bed with us at 5, they would have been just as happy. But, even with that 5'ish feeding, they still pretty much only ate once time last night!! HEAVEN!!
They may not do it again right away, but at least now we know that it is possible for them to go 8 hours at a time, and to make it 11 hours or more with only one feed at night!

Hi guys, I'm Sera, 29 and I live in London (the UK one!). It's taken me ages to create a final 101 Things list but here it is in all its glory and I've actually already completed one thing! (I should have posted the list before I went on holiday but didn't get around to it. I wonder how much of a challenge this project is going to be?!)

For the past few months I've been trying to sell on craigslist the bamboo flooring leftover from redoing the floors in my house. Clearly it hasn't been going so well.
When I found an email in response to the ad in my inbox this morning I was ecstatic. Then I read the email. And I quote:
On the off chance that this is a weird scam I'm not going to reply.

this looks similar to your other ad. I think this was you anyways. I think I may have your email confused with someone else.

Hey everybody,
I know that a lot of us have goals that involved dabbling in vegetarianism, so I just wanted to let everyone know that it's National Vegetarian Week starting tomorrow. So, if you've got a goal to try to be a vegetarian for a week or a month, or even forever, no time to start like tomorrow. You might even find that some of your favorite veggie-friendly eating establishments are celebrating with you.
Good luck!

Comcast has posted another update to AVS Forum about their ongoing issues with, and updates to, the TiVo software for their cable DVRs.
Hello everyone. I want to provide an update on the Comcast DVR with TiVo Service. They don't say why they've put the current update on hold and haven't continued deployment. I'd have to presume something went pear shaped with the initial roll-out. I hope they resume deployment soon and get the fixes out to the rest of the user base.
In the past, some users have noticed long delays (up to several minutes) when scheduling recordings (including setting up and modifying Season Passes). We made a change recently to correct this issue, and you should now see improved performance when scheduling recordings.
The software update for the Comcast/TiVo DVR that rolled out to part of the region at the beginning of April is on hold for the moment, but we are working to get it out as soon as possible. As a reminder, this release contains fixes for a perpetual reboot loop (with the front-panel display showing 8888), the Dolby Digital output on DCH set-top boxes, improves the Guide HD filter behavior, and other bug fixes.
I'm also happy to tell you that there will be another release targeted for the next few months that will provide noticeable performance improvements, particularly to scheduling and Guide. I can provide an update later on as we determine the exact timing for this release.
Thanks again for your feedback and your patience as Comcast and TiVo work to improve your user experience.

I work in a bookstore that has a cafe and one thing we're allowed free is ice water. So I had one of the guys fill a cup and then pour the ice into a blender along with a packet of cherry flavored Koolaid singles. Perfect! It was just like a slushie from Seven Eleven. The cup size was venti, nom nom nom...
